MISSOULA – Western Montana is beginning to see some air quality impact as a result of regional fire smoke and high pressure trapping stale air close to the ground.
Satellite images show smoke streaming into the state from Eastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle and that’s expected to continue. Additional smoke is also coming from a major fire burning in the Flathead Basin across the border in British Columbia.
The Department of Environmental Quality reported Tuesday that air quality had fallen to "moderate" levels in Libby, Columbia Falls, Frenchtown and Missoula. The air quality was "unhealthy for sensitive groups" in Thompson Falls by Tuesday afternoon.
