KALISPELL – An air quality alert was issued on Tuesday for Flathead, Lincoln, and Sanders counties.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality reports Northwest Montana is seeing the most significant air quality impacts due to a combination of nearby fires and a large amount of smoke pouring in from Idaho, Washington, and British Columbia.

Air quality in Libby and Thompson Falls was listed as "unhealthy" while air quality in Columbia Falls and Kalispell was "unhealthy for sensitive groups" as of mid-morning.

Elsewhere, skies are hazy but most of the smoke is remaining above ground level, resulting in widespread "moderate" impacts.
