HELENA – Outdoor stores in Helena say they’re seeing strong business as archery hunting season approaches.
Capital Sports archery shop manager Shaun Boese said hunters start coming in in mid-July.
“The biggest thing is to get their bows tuned up, get new strings if they need it, get their bows ready to go,” he said.
Boese said there’s been more activity this year than last summer, "business has been doing really well."
One reason could be the weather.
Last year, they expected warmer temperatures and more wildfire smoke around the start of archery season.
“I think a lot of people last year came in and they weren’t even interested in going the first couple of weeks, just because of the weather,” said Boese. “They were saying it was too smoky, they didn’t like walking in the smoke, it felt unhealthy to them. It was so hot that they were worried about getting their game animals out.”
When the weather is warm, Boese said hunters have to worry about moving their animals quickly, before the meat spoils.
The archery season for deer and elk opens on September 1st, and the general season opens on October 20 th.
