BUTTE – The Orediggers started their first day of classes in Butte on Monday.

Montana Tech campus was busy with students going back and forth to class and study between classes on the first day of the fall semester.

School officials don’t have hard enrollment figures yet, but they expect enrollment to be down about 100 students from last fall.

There have been many factors for falling enrollment.

“The big drop in terms of our students are students enrolled in the schools of mines and engineering and those are the programs often dependent on commodity prices,” said Montana Tech Provost Doug Abbott.

Montana Tech estimates its enrollment to be about 2,600 students.
