MISSOULA – Handball is a unique sport with a rich history.
The Red Death Handball Tournament in Missoula concluded on Sunday and we talked with one of those responsible for organizing the event.
The tournament marked the fourth stop in the World Players of Handball Race4Eight Professional Handball Tour which has over 120 amateurs and few of the top players in the world participating.
But none of this would be possible if it weren’t for red death himself, Randy Jolliffe. Back in the 1990s he and his friends were heading up to Kalispell for a tournament when it was canceled.
“I had taken time off work so I said I’m gonna have a tournament. So I started the stupid thing with a keg of beer and 15 guys and some T-shirts,” Jolliffe recalled.
Since then he has been working to arrange tournaments in the state of Montana and no matter the age or skill level, Jolliffe said the sport draws you in.
“If you put on a pair of gloves and you put a ball in your hand and a beer afterwards you’re going to love it. You’re gonna love it. I absolutely love it,” Jolliffe said.
