MISSOULA — The Missoula Police Department is asking the public to provide information about a swastika that was discovered Friday on Waterworks Hill near the popular peace sign.

MPD notes in a social media post that "persons entered the property and rearranged some stones from the peace symbol, into a "swastika'."

The owner of the property -- the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center -- has already replaced the stones, but MPD is asking for assistance from anyone who may have seen such activity occurring between Jan. 6 and Jan. 8.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Missoula Police Department at (406) 552-6300.

Staff says the peace sign serves as a beacon of the organization’s mission and offers a place for people to reflect.

Once they received word of the swastika, volunteers worked to remove the structure and do some other maintenance in the area.

The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center will be working with Har Shalom to address this situation and future incidents that may arise.
