KALISPELL – After a five-year-old child was killed last week in Kalispell while he was playing outside with a sled behind a vehicle. Flathead County Sheriff Brian Heino has tips for parents on how to keep your kids playing in the snow.

Sheriff Heino says kids shouldn’t sled or play near a busy street and that parents need to be aware of their surroundings. Also, make sure you’ve cleared the area if you’re backing up in your vehicle.

While tempting, Sheriff Heino stresses the importance of staying out of large snow piles.

“Make sure that we’re constantly aware of the surroundings our kids are in. Playing in these big snow banks are always fun, but there’s a lot of different things. There are plow truck drivers going around and snow being loaded back and forth, says Sheriff Heino.

If your child is injured while playing outside Sheriff Heino reminds people to immediately dial 9-1-1 for help.
