KALISPELL – The winter weather appears to be having an impact on crime in northwest Montana.

Flathead County Sheriff Brian Heino, this past weekend the county had six thefts, compared to the previous warmer weekends with 15 counts of theft.

Sheriff Heino says the drop is most likely because of the cold weather, “what we’re seeing is that people aren’t out and about, and so thefts, of course, have gone down a little bit this week because we’re all trying to stay indoors and keep warm,”

Sheriff Heino told MTN News that while cold temperatures lower theft rates, his deputies are focusing on keeping folks safe and getting them out of these frigid temperatures.
