GLACIER NATIONAL PARK — Glacier National Park has announced the approval of using e-bikes in the park.

E-bikes are low speed electric bikes with a power assist. There is no throttle on an e-bike and it does not resemble a motorcycle.

The new policy means e-bikes will be able to go wherever traditional bikes are allowed. E-bikes will not be allowed in designated wilderness areas or on oversnow roads in the winter.

Park Superintendent Jeff Mow told MTN News that he’s noticed certain demographics are more drawn toward the new technology.

“People to enjoy that hiker biker season, going on going to the Sun road, for a lot people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to get up there. I definitely get letters from older folks or from folks that were active bikers but don’t have the ability to still get up there,” said Mow.

Superintendent Mow noted that he does have the authority to make changes to the e-bike policy in case the bikes ever threaten people’s safety or natural resources.
