WHITEFISH — The first affordable multifamily apartments built since 2004 broke ground on Tuesday in Whitefish.
The 38 affordable homes located on Edgewood Place are part of the unanimous decision made by Whitefish City Council that requires 20% of large subdivisions and multi family units to have affordable units.
Dave Taylor with the Whitefish Planning Department says the goal is to give living spaces to those like teachers, police officers and nurses who have average incomes.
Whitefish Mayor John Muhlfeld told MTN News that 52% of those who work in Whitefish don't live in town as many can not afford to live in the city.
This housing is the first step towards establishing affordable options for residents and is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2020.
