WHITEFISH — The City of Whitefish is eyeing its current snow lot for brand new townhomes.

Some of the development would include affordable housing as called for under the city's legacy housing policy.

Whitefish City Manager Dana Smith told MTN News that the site the city is looking at currently holds all the town's excess snow.

She says the original proposal was to have a mix of townhomes and apartments.

However, residents across the street from the lot expressed concern over the height of the proposed apartments saying it obstructed their views.

Smith says these townhomes would be a part of Whitefish's legacy housing program, which means that 20% of the homes would be affordable housing.

She told MTN News they are keeping the neighborhood in mind by paying close attention to keeping the character of the new townhomes the same.

"People want the area to look similar. So, when we look at the townhomes that we're going to be developing, we're looking for characteristics to mimic that area," said Smith

The new townhome proposal will be discussed during a Whitefish City Council work session on Monday.

Smith said the city is looking at other options for where to put the extra snow, once the snow lot is transformed into a new housing development.
