Idaho man dies after car plunges into Salmon River

MISSOULA — Idaho State Police said a Salmon man who was critically injured when the car he was riding in plunged into the Salmon River has died at a Missoula hospital.

22-year-old Conner P. McGarrity had been taken by air ambulance to Missoula following the crash Monday evening along U.S. 93 south of Salmon just north of Ellis.

Troopers said he was driving the car, lost control as he was rounding a left hand curve, going off the right side of the road. ISP saidLarsen then over-corrected, driving across both lanes of travel, over the embankment and into the river.

The Custer County Sheriff's Office, Challis Ambulance, Challis Fire, Lemhi County Sheriff's Office, Salmon Search & Rescue, and Salmon Ambulance all helped in getting the pair to shore. Both were taken to Steele Memorial Medical Center in Salmon, with McGarrity being flown later to Missoula, where he succumbed to his injuries today.

Troopers are still investigating the crash.
