WHITEFISH — A home in Whitefish is a total loss after a fire broke out over the weekend in a house on West 3rd Street.
Whitefish Fire Chief Joe Page said the house was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived on scene Saturday evening.
He said one resident was in the home at the time the fire started, but that person was able to safely evacuate.
Page said a neighbor knocked on the door to get those still in the home out safely.
While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, officials believe the blaze started from the back patio.
“Right now we’re looking at possible smoking out on the rear deck but that has not been confirmed,” Page said.
Fire officials said it's unknown at this time if the occupant had working smoke detectors in their home.
Multiple fire agencies assisted Whitefish with the blaze, including Columbia Falls, Big Mountain, and Evergreen.
