The fall is a popular time of year for people to enjoy hiking, fishing and hunting in the backcountry.

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office has a few tips to remind you how to stay safe while recreating in the outdoors this fall.

First, check the weather forecast and be prepared for changing conditions. Bring lots of layers so you can stay warm.

Make sure you have plenty of water to stay hydrated while you’re outdoors.

If possible, take a buddy when you go hiking or hunting in the backcountry.

“If you don’t have to go by yourself, go with someone else. If you are going by yourself make sure you let other people know where you’re going and when you’re supposed to be out,” said Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin.

“So if things go bad when we get the call, our search and rescue folks, we have the most information as possible. Where you were going. Where you parked. When you were supposed to come out. That helps us a ton in being able to locate you safely.”

Finally, don’t forget your bear spray. Carry it on your belt or somewhere that’s easy to access. And make sure you know how to use it.
