Monday, February 24th marks the 56th anniversary of an unsolved break-in at the First National Bank in White Sulphur Springs.
According to a Facebook post, sometime over the previous weekend, the suspects had entered the bank by breaking a window in the back of the building.
The vault door was "drilled and punched" and the thieves made off with nearly $30,000 in silver dollars and small coins. The coins weighed an estimated 1,700 lbs.
During the investigation, police found six and a half rolls of half dollars in the snow.
The Meagher Co. Sheriff's Office said in the post that it had been a snowy weekend. Highway 12 had been closed multiple times on the 22nd and 23rd.
Several people in town reported seeing suspicious vehicles in town over that weekend, however, neither of the vehicles were ever found and no suspects have ever been charged.
The sheriff's office says the case remains open to this day.
