MISSOULA – Transportation Security Administration officers have been calling out sick and working without pay across the country as the partial government shutdown continues to affect federal workers nationwide.

Missoula International Airport Director Chris Jensen says that Missoula TSA agents are still showing up despite growing concerns.

“The TSA  is, they’re very professional people and they’re doing their jobs,” Jensen said. “They care deeply about the traveling public, so that’s why they continue to show up every day.”

Jensen estimates there are around 50 federal TSA agents employed in Missoula and said the airport is preparing for the long haul. Airport employees are providing lunches for those affected.

Next week the airport will host representatives from organizations like the Food Bank and AniMeals, along with local financial institutions willing to provide interest-free loans to help the federal employees get by.

“They’re all proud, and they’re all doing the best they can. They’re not asking for anything specifically, but we’re certainly aware that this is a tough time for them.”

About 51,000 TSA employees missed their first paycheck on Friday. Jensen encourages anyone with ideas or contributions to contact the airport at 406-728-4381.
