MISSOULA – The Montana Department of Transportation has announced they will be opening the new Milwaukee Trail pedestrian underpass by Sept. 1.

The underpass trail is only one piece of the project ongoing Russell Street – Broadway to Dakota project — which also includes the building of a new Russell Street Bridge.

Missoula officials note the underpass — which runs beneath Russell Street to connect users to the middle of town — has been a highly anticipated part of the project.

MDT Missoula District Construction Operations Engineer John Schmidt says this is an exciting milestone.

“The increased connectivity we’re going to be able to provide the city of Missoula is really exciting. Were progressing like we want to,” he told MTN News.

The signal at the Russell Street and Wyoming Street intersection is anticipated to be
delivered, installed and operational by the end of the summer.

The Milwaukee Trail pedestrian underpass will be open for use in the fall and Riverfront Trail connection be formalized and open upon full completion of the Russell Street Bridge in 2020.

Plans and road detours can be found on the project’s webpage.
