MISSOULA — Construction work is beginning on a section of Third Street West in Missoula.
City crews are working to restore a smooth driving surface between Orange Street to the Bitterroot Branch railroad tracks.
The work -- which will cover six blocks -- began on Monday.
The street will be closed one block at a time, and detours will be in place.
The work will take six weeks or longer, according to a news release.
The street was recently the site of a Missoula Water project replacing a water main and service lines.
Street Division crews will excavate to remove the remains of the century-old trolley route running down the street.
Crews will also remove two sets of abandoned railroad tracks near the Bitterroot Branch and restore the roadbed, adding a new asphalt surface.
The traveling public can check the detour map here.
