Body found during Missoula structure fire response

LATEST UPDATE (7:00 p.m.):

Just after 8:30 a.m. on January 13, the Missoula Police Department and Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2300 block of Ernest Avenue.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire.

While on scene, responders found a man dead inside the house.

The Missoula Police Department says initial information shows the fire was not the cause of death.

The man's identity is not known at this time.

A collaborative investigation between the departments is on-going.

The police are looking into the cause of death while the cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the fire department.

Man Found Dead in Missoula House Fire, Death Not Fire-Related

SECOND REPORT (4:55 p.m.): An investigation is underway after a man was found dead in a home in the 2300 block of Missoula's Earnest Avenue on January 13.

Officials had responded to the area initially for a structure fire.

Witnesses say fire crews quickly extinguished smoke coming from a residence.

A man was also found dead at the home.

Several agencies were on scene including MESI and Northwestern Energy.

Details are limited at this time but we will update as soon as we learn more.

FIRST REPORT (9:23 a.m.):

The Missoula Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2300 block of Ernest Avenue on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters, EMS and Missoula police responded around 8:30 a.m. for a report of smoke visible from the roof and windows of the home.

Missoula police are expected to update the media shortly with additional information about the incident.
