MISSOULA — Safety at the Missoula County Fairgrounds is always a topic of discussion this time of year.

Law enforcement told MTN News on Thursday that there had not been any issues thus far at the Western Montana Fair.

They are also confident they wont encounter any major issues moving forward.

Officers reflecting on years past say this is a much safer environment than it used to be.

"So far we haven't had any injuries, disturbances, or anything like that...the first 24 hours resulted in no arrests at the fair," said Missoula Police Lt. Eddie McLean.

"if you look, you know, 15-plus years ago with the horse racing and everything else -- a lot more alcohol flowing naturally we ended up having more problems. to deal with and needed a much larger law enforcement presence," he added.
