MISSOULA — We've shown you the controversy surrounding a new apartment complex in the Grant Creek area near Interstate 90 and now the buildings are going up.
Developer Aultco Construction says they are working with neighbors in the area, the Missoula City Council, and other Missoula officials to get everyone on board with the project.
Residents in the area say they're concerned about traffic and fire safety, but Ken Ault says independent traffic studies have shown no problems.
The lot is on mixed zoning. Last year the developers petitioned to rezone but were denied. Ault says now they're working to come up with a PUD or developer agreement and they're hoping to build between around 900 units.
"But they don't want any over 500 either. If we do 500, we're leaving 500 units on the table, which they'll never get back. That's the crappy thing for the city, just because there's such a need for it."
Ault says he wants to keep working with the Friends of Grant Creek, and plans to bring his project in front of the city council again sometime in the near future.
