So far this season, 305 bison have been captured or killed near Yellowstone National Park.
The Interagency Bison Management Plan for this season calls for 600 to 900 bison to be culled from the Yellowstone herd.
Ninety-six of the animals culled so far were taken by hunters. Most of those were tribal members who are allowed to hunt the bison outside the park under treaties with the U.S. government.
Another 209 bison were captured and slaughtered. The animals were then given to various tribes.
At the start of the winter, the Yellowstone bison herd was estimated at about 4,500 animals. The optimal herd size for the park is set at about 4,000 animals.
