FAIRMONT HOT SPRINGS — A large conference is underway near Butte that is addressing environmental issues and clean waterways.

More than 150 experts in environmental services are gathering at Fairmont Hot Springs for the annual Air and Waste Management Association Pacific Northwest International Section meeting.

The three-day event features discussions on issues including emissions regulations and how the mining industry can be good stewards of the environment while still being productive.

“Nowadays they are very much into stewardship and they are trying to do as much as they can do,” said Kumar Ganesan with Montana Tech.

“Of course, they try to get away with some of the things, but at the same time they are actually trying very hard to go in to stewardship," he added.

Participants in the conference are expected to take a tour of Butte on Thursday and visit some of the city's historic mining sites.
