(UPDATE, 4 p.m.) The Montana Highway Patrol confirmed that a 29-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash on Friday.

The man was driving a Toyota 4Runner by himself when his vehicle drifted off the road and hit a tree. The crash was reported to MHP at 11:18 a.m., but a highway trooper said it was unclear when the crash happened and it could have occurred as early as Thursday night.

The road conditions were dry, according to MHP. Whether factors like speed or alcohol played a role in the crash were unclear to investigators as of Friday afternoon. Damage to the vehicle and body also made it difficult to determine whether he was wearing a seatbelt.

His name has not yet been released. MHP continues to investigate — we'll update you if we learn more.
