WEST YELLOWSTONE — A man who got his snowmobile stuck near West Yellowstone Thursday evening was rescued after he called 911.
At 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, the 45-year-old man got his snowmobile stuck in the backcountry on the Big Sky trail system about 16 miles northwest of West Yellowstone.
The man was snowmobiling by himself and did not have the gear to survive the night outdoors. Fortunately, he had cell phone service and was able to call 911, allowing dispatchers to pinpoint his exact location.
Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue members were able to ride to the man and after a group effort, including a few SAR members getting stuck in the very deep snow, they were able to get the man’s snowmobile unstuck.
The man was then able to ride out of the backcountry on his own.
