Update from Fire Marshal Bill Tatum on Friday at 10:37 pm:
"The fire destroyed the inside of a small automotive repair shop including all of its contents and two vehicles parked inside. While replacing a fuel pump, gasoline spilled out of the fuel tank onto the floor. While the two occupants inside the shop were cleaning up the spill, the gasoline vapors found a nearby ignition source and started the fire. The occupants attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose and fire extinguisher. One of the occupants sustained minor burns to his hands and face when the gas tank of the vehicle that was being repaired exploded and caught his shirt on fire. A Good Samaritan on scene extinguished the fire on the victim’s shirt. The victim was transported to a local hospital, treated and released."
Tatum estimates damages from the fire at $150,000.
Update 8 p.m. A man working on a vehicle in a shop at Extreme Machines at 1410 Central Ave. was injured in a fire Friday evening, according to Billings firefighters.
The man was transported in an AMR ambulance to a local hospital but appeared to be in good, stable condition, said Billings Battalion Chief Alan Harper.
Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire, which was quickly extinguished, Harper said. The call came just after 6 p.m.and briefly closed the block.
No one else was in the building, Harper said.
Firefighters are responding to a structure fire on the 1400 block of Central Avenue.
The call was made after 6 p.m. and is at a shop for Extreme Machines.
