BILLINGS — U.S. Marshal for Montana Rod Ostermiller announced he will retire on Dec. 31 after nearly 30 years of service.
Ostermiller was confirmed as U.S. marshal in 2018 by a unanimous vote of the U.S. Senate. He was recommended by Sen. Steve Daines and appointed by President Donald Trump.
Ostermiller began his career with the service in 1991 and was named the chief deputy marshal for Montana in 2004.
The Marshals Service is responsible for arresting fugitives, protecting judges and transporting federal prisoners.
He was the first chief deputy marshal to be appointed his current position in Montana in 70 years.
In a news release, Ostermiller thanked both Daines and Trump for his appointment.
He also urged "unwavering support" for all first responders.
