WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on Tuesday over a case involving Superfund cleanup for residents in Opportunity and Crackerville, west of Butte.

The high court heard the Atlantic-Richfield Company’s appeal of a Montana State Supreme Court decision that will allow residents in these communities that were contaminated by the smelter in Anaconda to file lawsuits against the company.

The residents claim cleanup of the pollution in their soil was not adequate. The Supreme Court will make a final decision on this matter at a later date.
