KALISPELL – You might call him a “lucky buck”, a deer rescued by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks staff after having his antlers tangled with a deer who didn’t survive.

Residents called FWP’s Region 1 office a few days ago, after they spotted the two deer with their antlers tangled off Whitefish Stage Road.

FWP agents were able to us a “catch pole” to get ahold of the surviving deer, with Game Warden Sargeant Jon Obst using a saw to remove the antler from the dead deer, freeing the live one. He was able to walk away apparently unharmed.

State wildlife officials say that frequently at this time of the year, buck deer and bull elk can become tangled while they are in the fall rut, but the story doesn’t always have a happy ending.
