MISSOULA – The West Central Montana Avalanche Center reports that the person caught in a Saturday avalanche near Teton Pass has died.
“Unfortunately, we just received word that an avalanche fatality occurred yesterday outside of Choteau. Preliminary information is that the individual was in a snowmobile group and not wearing an avalanche transceiver,” the Center stated in a Sunday post. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims family and friends.”
The Flathead Avalanche Center staff will be investigating, according to the West Central Montana Avalanche Center.
GREAT FALLS – The Teton County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that one person was recovered in an avalanche.
The avalanche occurred Saturday evening west of Choteau in the Teton Pass area. One person was recovered; however, the Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on that person’s condition.
Mercy Flight was called to the scene and 50 search and rescue personnel also responded, including fire crews from Choteau and Fairfield, Teton County deputies, and Forest Service law enforcement.
About 15 volunteers were on standby, according to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office.
The name of the person involved has not yet been released.
