WHITEFISH – A sure sign of the weather warming up is the sighting of bears throughout the region.

Mike Potter spotted a grizzly bear wandering on Wednesday morning near Upper Whitefish Lake.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesman Dillon Tabish says that Upper Whitefish Lake is a common area for grizzlies, particularly, in the spring after when the animals come out of hibernation and are looking for food.

Tabish recommends that property owners put their garbage in garages or in a secure container as bears can smell food from a mile away.

He also advises that if you do come across a bear, back away slowly and make noise to make the bear aware of your presence.

Tabish says there is no threat to the public at this point from this sighting, but anyone who sees a bear please should contact FWP as soon as possible.
