HAMILTON — There's a phone scam making the rounds in the Bitterroot.

Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton says residents are receiving phone calls from a fraudulent source claiming to be the Social Security Administration.

The caller will also state that local law enforcement has been notified and ask the resident to wire money or buy/load a pre-paid gift or credit card.

Sheriff Holton adds that residents should also be aware that scammers can load a caller ID number to represent a local agency, making it appear to be a legitimate call.

The Ravalli County Sheriff's Office reports all of these calls are scams.

Local law enforcement or the Social Security Administration will never ask you to wire money or buy loaded/pre-paid cards to pay fines, fees, or taxes.

People should always be suspicious about any call asking for money or compensation.
