The Musselshell County Sheriff and a Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks warden responded to the report of a dead bull elk east of Roundup Sunday afternoon.

After investigation, it was determined the bull elk died of a single gunshot.

The sheriff of Musselshell County Shawn Lesnik posted on their Facebook page Sunday that the entire bull - a mature six point, was left to rot in the field.

He added that this type of crime is incomprehensible and should not be something that members of our community can turn a blind-eye to.

A second mature bull was located in close proximity to where the first bull was.

Lesnik said that while he was updating the Facebook post with the news of the second elk shot, the dispatch center received information about a third elk that was found.

If you have any information about this crime, please call The Musselshell County Sheriff’s office or TIP-MONT, which is Montana's toll-free hotline to report poaching and other crimes.

Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for cash rewards.

“This is a horrendous crime and the individuals that perpetrated it need to be held accountable," said Lesnik.
