United Way in Helena is collecting items to fill backpacks for the homeless.

Items needed include backpacks, shoes, non-perishable foods, and anything else to help the homeless for the incoming winter season, according to United Way.

“With the Coronavirus, people being out of work, we got a lot of people there are struggling and, unfortunately, there's always that need, but it seems like it's even a little worse in a time like this,” says David Crenshaw, the coordinator of the Backpacks for the Homeless program. “So, what we're just trying to do is just to make sure that, with as harsh as the winters can be in Montana, that their time is a little bit easier to be able to survive through those months."

Collection boxes can be found at Walgreens, CVS, Capital Sports and the United Way offices on Lyndale Avenue.
