Winter weather causing crashes, road closures in Western Montana

MISSOULA – A MEANS Alert has been issued by the Missoula Police Department warning of poor visibility and icy road conditions.

The issue — which was issued at 11:15 a.m. on Monday — asks that drivers traveling on roads south of South Avenue “use extreme caution.”

Emergency crews are responding to the reports of an accident on 39th Street in the area of South Russell Street.

Crews are also responding to reports of a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 93 south of Missoula near Five Valley Honda.

The Montana Department of Transportation was also reporting a semi-truck crash on Interstate 90 westbound that was blocking the right lane approximately 1½ miles east of the Bearmouth area.

MDT also reported at mid-day that the left lane was blocked on I-90 eastbound near milemarker 26 near the Drexel exit in Mineral County.

StormTracker Meteorologist Lewis Dortch says that a prolonged snow event with periods of moderate to heavy snow is expected to impact areas in western Montana through the middle of this week.

MISSOULA – The winter weather is causing numerous accidents and delaying traffic across the area.

The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office has lifted the MEANS alert that was issued at 9 a.m. reporting the Interstate 90 westbound was closed in Missoula just east of mile marker 107 due to an injury accident.

All traffic was being taken off I-90 West at the East Missoula exit but as of 9:50 a.m. the road had been reopened.

An accident earlier Monday morning in the curves north of Lolo closed down the right lane and caused heavy traffic delays for drivers heading from the Bitterroot into Missoula.

Snow and winter conditions also forced official in Idaho to close Monida Pass on Interstate 15 south of  Dillon at the Montana/Idaho border.  I-15 was also closed from the Lima to Dillon, according to MDT.

Drivers on I-90 in the Livingston area were being warned of severe crosswinds in the area on Monday morning.

An accident involving several commercial vehicles — including one carrying explosives — forced authorities to close Highway 212 in southeast Montana. The road was closed between Broadus and the Wyoming state line.

Several accidents were also causing delays and a partial road closure on a section of Farm to Market Road north of Church Drive in Kalispell.

A slide-off crash was also reported near the intersection of Mountainview and Reserve drives as well as at Rose Crossing and US Highway 2 in Kalispell.

The Ravalli County Sheriff’s Office sent out an alert on Sunday evening that Golf Course Road will be closed at Kurtz Lane near Hamilton until further notice, A detour has been posted.

The Montana Highway Patrol was also reporting on Monday morning that an accident was causing some delays on the Eastside Highway near Beartooth Road in the area of the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge in Stevensville.
