MISSOULA — The Humane Society of Western Montana got a truckload of new cats to take care of on Tuesday.

The 19 animals came to Missoula from the shelter in Dillon that was overrun with animals.

Executive Director Marta Pierpoint says it keeps in contact with other shelters, because it can provide extensive care.

"We have capacity medically and behaviorally that some shelters don't have," said Pierpoint.

The 19 cats were staying at the Beaverhead Animal Shelter for an extended period of time.

Pierpoint visited Dillon a couple of weeks ago to vaccinate, microchip, and examine about 80 cats.

"The situation started a long time ago," said Pierpoint. "It's a circumstance of institutional hoarding, where the shelter just became overrun at a certain point."

Last May, BAS changed leadership. But before that, it was overrun with hundreds of animals.

It reached out to ASPCA and the Humane Society in Missoula to help care for the cats that still need homes.
