HELENA — Severe thunderstorms ripped across central and eastern Montana on Tuesday, producing a rare tornado in Petroleum County.

The tornado was brief but confirmed by local law enforcement.

Wind gusts with the thunderstorms were as high as 90mph up on the Hi-Line and hail was as large as baseballs near Judith Gap.

The line of storms will continue to move out of the state through Wednesday morning.
