MISSOULA – Dozens of volunteers gathered at Fort Missoula on Tuesday to help fill sandbags for those hoping to hold off the next surge in river levels expected later this week.
Among those volunteering were several refugees who have been displaced from their homes due to conflict and natural disasters from around the globe.
Team Rubicon worked with Soft Landing Missoula to set aside several hours for the their team members and refugees to help out. Team members say their goal is to help their neighbors in the community in times of need, and that the refugees are able to relate to those facing difficult times.
“We have some folks that really wanted to come with us today and fill some sandbags. I think they have first-hand experience of what it feels like to be displaced from their homes and really wanted to help,” said Soft Landing Missoula Director Mary Poole.
Team Rubicon representatives say they are excited that Soft Landing Missoula and other organizations are donating their time, and that they will continue to take as many volunteers as possible as rivers begin to rise this week.
