KALSIPELL — A candlelight vigil to honor the memory of a teen who was found dead in a field near Hardin earlier this month will be held on Wednesday evening in Kalispell.

Selena Not Afraid’s body was found in a field in Big Horn County on Jan. 20 with preliminary autopsy results determining that the teen died of hypothermia.

A funeral service was held on Sunday for the 16-year-old Hardin girl who was reported missing on New Year’s Day.

The group Love Lives Here in the Flathead Valley notes in a social media post that “all people in the community, Native and non-Native, are welcome to attend this vigil.”

Wednesday evening’s vigil will take place from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Community Spirit Monument in Kalispell’s Woodland Park.

People who plan on attending the event are being asked to bring candles and to wear red.

Event organizers say in addition to remembering Not Afraid, the vigil also seeks to bring attention to the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) in Montana.

Similar vigils were held earlier this month in Hamilton and at the University of Montana in Missoula.
