MISSOULA — The Missoula Food Bank and Community Center is partnering with the United States Postal Service on May 9 for Stamp Out Hunger, a nationwide food drive aimed at helping families put food on the table this summer.

Residents are invited to leave nonperishable donations, such as macaroni and cheese, canned proteins and peanut butter, by their mailbox before regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 9.

"That is an opportunity for folks to drop off their canned goods at your mailbox and your letter carrier will gather those up and they'll bring them back to their post office and then bring them in here to Missoula Food Bank and Community Center where we're able to distribute that out into the community to families in need," Amy Allison, Missoula Food Bank's executive director, said.

Last year, the drive raised 7,000 pounds of food.

"Missoula is a community that cares deeply and takes action," said Amy Allison.

This year, Allison said the goal is 10,000 pounds.

"We're hearing from families all the time right now that they are really feeling the stretch in their budgets and so when our community can step up and show up and help us meet that goal of 10,000 pounds, it really allows us to ensure that families have what they need to get through the summer and make sure kids have fun," Allison said.

While nonperishable items are ideal, the food bank says anything helps.

In-person donation drop-offs will also be accepted May 9 from noon to 4 p.m. at Rosauers, Pattee Creek Market, Albertsons on East Broadway and Albertsons on North Reserve.
