One month after a jailbreak, the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office is hiring three or four additional jailers.
Since three inmates escaped from the jail in Hardin last month, Big Horn County commissioners have been working with the sheriff’s office to make sure the jail is secure.
Big Horn County Undersheriff Eric Winburn said Wednesday this is "very, very good news."
He says the county has also looked at several improvements at the jail, including more cameras and an updated security system.
Winburn says with the additional jailers, once fully staffed, two dedicated jailers will be on each shift.
Four inmates lured the lone jailer into a cell, assaulted him to get his keys, and then assaulted a dispatcher before three of the men escaped late on the night of Feb. 8.
Stephen Caplett and Anthony Castro were captured in Billings within days of the jailbreak. The third escapee, Andrew Parham , was on the run until he was captured in Crow Agency Tuesday morning.
All three escapees face between two years and 120 years in prison.
Big Horn County detention officer position responsibilities include admitting, booking, searching and internment of prisoners. The full-time jobs pay $16.50 an hour, along with benefits.
