BUTTE — NorthWestern Energy is asking Montanans to conserve energy that is in high demand.
With low temperatures and winter storms rolling through, people want to heat their homes and stay warm, but that could overwork the power grid and keep people who need it from accessing heat.
"There’s high demand times such as these extreme temperatures right now when it’s very cold," said NorthWestern Energy public relations specialist Jo Dee Black.
Black said that creating less demand on the power grid will help those impacted by the extreme cold and winter weather.
"The less energy that we use through our conservation efforts means the less demand there is and that helps us all," Black said.
Conserving energy will help the power grid get energy to people and places that need it most.
Here are some tips to help you conserve energy:
- Make sure unnecessary devices are unplugged, like your phone when it’s done charging
- Turn off lights that you don’t need on.
- Make sure to close your blinds to keep the cold air out and warm air in.
"It’s something we all can do to contribute to make sure that we all have enough energy to meet needs," Black said.
