HAMILTON — Cross off another long-running community event falling to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Special Olympics organizers canceling the Bitterroot Winter Games.

The games at Lost Trail Powder Mountain are a January tradition for generations of athletes and their families.

The Games this past January marked the 39th time the competitors have traveled to the Montana-Idaho border, coming just weeks before the pandemic hit.

This January would have been the 40th anniversary.

But organizers say they're scrubbing the event, calling it an "extremely difficult decision", but one made with the "health and well being of our beloved participants and volunteers at the forefront."

Planning will shift to the Games return in 2022.
