CORVALLIS – Ravalli County commissioners will go ahead and formally request that the State of Montana lower the speed limit on the busy Woodside Cutoff Road.

The Montana Department of Transportation had suggested last spring that it was time to lower the speed limit on the road just east of the intersection with US Highway 93 South.

MDT officials suggested at the time that additional traffic on the road combined with a narrow and aging bridge — and traffic entering the road from the Woodside Fishing Access were causing safety problems. The state had suggested rolling the speed limit from 60 mph to 55 mph.

But area residents have been telling the county commissioners that’s still not slow enough and on Tuesday the commissioners agreed, signing a letter to MDT requesting the speed limit on that section of the road near the bridge drop all the way down to 45 mph.

The speed reduction would apply only to the presently posted 60 mph section since the speed limit already drop as you drive into Corvallis.
