MISSOULA — After 12 years in sports journalism, KPAX Sports Director Derek Buerkle is leaving our station to pursue a master’s degree in education.

Buerkle has many wonderful memories covering sports in Montana, including when Anthony Johnson led UM back from 20 points down at halftime to beat Weber State in the Big Sky Championship.

“I grew to realize covering everyone else's great achievements forced me to miss out on priceless moments with my family,” Buerkle said during KPAX’s 5:30 broadcast. “There will always be another high school football game on the next Friday night. But one-year old Aiden chugging his first milkshake only happens once.”

The entire KPAX family is sad to see Buerkle go, but more than anything, we’re happy to see him pursue his dream of teaching and to spend more time with his family.

Tune in to Buerkle’s last KPAX broadcast tonight at 10pm.
