MISSOULA — The Class A football game between Butte Central and Corvallis has been canceled after the Butte Central football team was placed in quarantine as a result of a positive COVID-19 case at the school.

Corvallis athletic director Tyson Tucker said in an email that the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department opted to quarantine Butte Central's football team on Saturday. The game was moved from Friday to Saturday at 7 p.m. due to a positive case discovered at the school on Friday. According to Tucker, after additional contact tracing was done, the health department decided enough players were in direct contact with the case to quarantine the team.

Tucker added that only a few members of the team were in quarantine, not the entire team, and Butte Central did not want to put Corvallis players at risk by continuing to play the game with those who were not deemed as close contacts in case one of those players possibly had the virus as a precautionary measure.

For Butte Central (0-3) it is the second time the Maroons have had a game canceled this season. Butte Central missed its scheduled opener against Hamilton after a lack of preparation time before the beginning of the season.

According to the MHSA guidelines for COVID-19, because the school is opting to go into quarantine, the game is seen as a no contest.

Butte Central is scheduled to play Stevensville next Friday while Corvallis (1-2) is scheduled to play Dillon.
